The Coleman Xtreme 50QT Wheeled Cooler for spring and summer days out

At the risk of getting giddy, at BCH Camping we’re preparing for the arrival of spring. We can smell it! March is the time when we, the Great British public, peer out of curtains or take a walk to see the flora and fauna associated with spring cautiously make an appearance.

It’s at this time of year that our thoughts turn to how we want to spend our leisure time in the spring and summer months, and where we want to go on holiday. With a watchful level of uncertainty remaining around travel, it is expected that the staycation will still be popular in 2022.

A dictionary will tell you that a staycation is “a holiday spent in one’s home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions”. Regardless how you spend your staycation, days out are an intrinsic part of making the most of your leisure time with family and friends.

When organising a day out, food is a big factor. When will you eat, where will you eat and what will you eat? Particularly when small people are involved it’s important to have food planned. At BCH Camping we stock a range of ice boxes and fridges to keep food fresh or drinks cold. These can vary from fridge freezers to coolbags and freeze packs.

The mama of coolers available from our website is the Coleman Xtreme 50QT wheeled cooler. There’s a reason it has Xtreme in the name!

The Coleman Xtreme 50QT wheeled cooler

When it comes to versatility, durability and performance the Coleman Xtreme 50QT wheeled cooler is unrivalled in the BCH Camping cooling world! Here are some features that will whet your appetite (for food and drink that has been kept perfectly cool for consumption on hot, sunny days spent in the beautiful countryside or next to a rippling sea on sandy beaches. Sorry, getting giddy again!).
  • 47 litre capacity. For drinks, it can hold 84 330ml cans
  • Measures 58 x 44 x 46cm
  • Polyurethane foam insulation keeps contents cold for up to four days
  • Two sturdy wheels and telescopic steel handle for easy transportation
  • Moulded carrying handles each side
  • Drain plug to remove ice melt
  • Robust Have-A-Seat™ hinged lid with four drink holders supports up to 113kg so can be used as a seat
  • Stylish outer casing
  • Retextured EZ-Clean top for quick, easy washing
It is the portability of the Coleman Xtreme 50QT wheeled cooler that makes it ideal for festivals and large families or groups. The sturdy, all-terrain wheels and telescopic handle make it easy to pull along, regardless of its size. It’s the capacity to transport large volumes of food and drink that makes this cooler truly unique, and being able to sit down on top of it when you’ve reached your destination is an added bonus!
The two side handles and a lid release are moulded into the outer skin which makes them virtually unbreakable. Please don’t take that as a challenge! The Have-A-Seat™ hinged lid with the four moulded drink holders can act as a table or a seat in addition to its main function of keeping the unit air tight. The entire design of this cooler is around socialising and convenience which is what holidays and festivals should be about.

Another unique feature of the Coleman 50QT Xtreme cooler is its very handy and practical drain plug which is located at the base of the cooler to avoid having to tip out the contents to drain melted ice.

Setting up the Coleman 50QT Xtreme cooler for use

As a passive cooler, the Coleman 50QT Xtreme cooler requires ice blocks. At BCH Camping we supply the Campingaz M30 Freeze Pack. The Freez'Pack® units should be placed in the refrigerator between 2 and 4 hours before using, until they are completely frozen. They can then be inserted into the cooler.

After that, the polyurethane foam installation takes over. Coleman redesigned the shape of the cooler to round off the edges and include feet in the base to maximise airflow under the unit. This helps to offset the typical 30% loss of heat through the bottom.

About Coleman

Coming up with such a practical and efficient design for today’s lifestyle requires a great deal of experience in creating innovative products for outdoor pursuits. Coleman certainly have the right credentials. In Alabama in 1899, William Coffin Coleman was intrigued by the use of pressurised gasoline in lamps and eventually set up The Hydro-Carbon Light Company which offered a rental service for lanterns.

Soon Coleman’s attention moved to lighting football fields and outdoor leisure facilities which led to the creation of the Coleman Lamp Company. The company joined the war effort at the start of World War II by designing equipment for troops including a compact stove that could use any fuel under any temperature. The result was the Model 520 Pocket Stove, later known as the GI Pocket Stove.

The 1950s saw the Coleman invention of the portable, plastic-lined cool box, followed in later decades by tents, chairs and sleeping bags. Coleman state that their aim is to “enable and inspire people to get outside”. Their development of a range of technologies and product innovations including the recent, game-changing BlackOut Bedroom® technology has realised their aim. Today, Coleman is part of the Newell family of brands.
