Introducing the updated Rab Ladakh Jacket for all-weather activities

If testing your agility, resilience and physicality on walks and climbs in stormy, challenging weather is your thing, you’ll be looking forward to the colder seasons that are almost upon us.

No doubt you enjoy the tingle of excitement as you open the drawers, wardrobes and cupboards that have been storing your ‘extreme weather’ gear for the past few months. You can almost smell the cold air, hear the wind and laugh in the face of the driving rain!

Too much?

OK, but it’s important to reset the scene to remind you of what your hobbies expose you to!
When it comes to being prepared for physically demanding walking and climbing you need to be wearing suitable protective clothing, otherwise the experience won’t meet your expectations.

If you’ve been wearing the same jacket year on year, chances are it’s not providing the same level of protection. Furthermore, advances in the technology used in more recent jacket designs make them far superior in quality and consumer experience than older jackets.

At BCH Camping we like to keep our customers updated on developments in outdoor clothing that will help them get the most out of their activities. This month, we bring you the lowdown on the Rab Ladakh jacket. Its recent update has made this jacket a gamechanger in weather protection and comfort for outdoor enthusiasts.

The Rab Ladakh jacket is the real deal

If you like to climb in stealth mode, the ultra-quiet Rab Ladakh men’s jacket is for you! Durable, windproof, waterproof, soft and lightweight, this fast-wicking shell offers incredible breathability and unrestricted movement, making it the ideal choice for a wide range of active mountain sports.

GORE-TEX® fabric with C-KNIT™ backer

The three-layer GORE-TEX® fabric with C-KNIT™ backer contributes to the jacket’s reduced weight and breathability, as well as the smooth, soft fabric that provides next-to-skin comfort.

Designed for all-weather use, GORE-TEX® is a waterproof, breathable fabric membrane that repels liquid water while allowing water vapour to pass through.

Helmet-compatible mountain hood

This is where the designers have excelled themselves in this updated version of the Rab Ladakh. The hood has an integrated wind collar, a laminated peak and windproof three-way adjustment.

The hood is big enough for use with a climbing helmet while still providing plenty of face protection and head movement. If you’re not wearing a climbing helmet, the adjustment at the base of the neck reduces volume and pulls in the front cords so that there are no slack ends that might hit you in the face. The adjustment also prevents draughts around the back of the neck.

The stiff and wired peak offers extra protection from the rain, and drives wind and snow down over the collar, blocking the weather from the face.

More than a regular fit

The jacket is a regular fit but is long so extends below the backside when hiking, and doesn’t ride up past the waist when reaching up. The shoulders are roomy offering more freedom of movement. The sleeves are long, covering the hands in the absence of gloves and offering protection during rope work.

Two-way deep-venting pit zips

Whilst this may sound rather intriguing, it basically means that there are two long, easy-to-use two way zips in the armpits to prevent overheating. The zip pulls are different so that it’s easy to differentiate between them by touch which saves unnecessary fumbling, even when wearing thick winter gloves.

Pockets and storage

How many pockets might you need? The Rab Ladakh has a secure internal zipped pocket, a zipped chest pocket with an internal securing clip, and a pair of harness-compatible YKK® AquaGuard® zipped hand pockets. Those will no doubt suffice!

The hand pockets are huge and protected by slanted laminated storm flaps. They also have internal shaping to handle both flat and 3D objects. The chest pocket is large enough for a pair of gloves or a map, while the smaller, internal zipped chest pocket is ideal for a phone or wallet and is accessed by opening the main zip so the contents are fully protected.

Review by Howl Bushcraft

In a recent review, Howl Bushcraft put the Rab Ladakh through its paces in extreme weather on a midnight navigation session. The reviewer concluded he was “satisfied that throughout the hike I’d not had to consider my protection for the elements, and could focus on being efficient with my navigation. This highest compliment I can think of for clothing is that you simply don’t need to think about it when you’re out.
Thanks to the awesome team at Rab for the Ladakh, and for the continued dedication to crafting well thought out clothing to facilitate adventures in the outdoors.”
